Droughts Legos Jackets
Ostrich news January 20 - January 26
It is time for the ostrich news.
DROUGHTS
these poor innocent birds who food consumption cannot be sustained in times of great drought
The ostrich farm industry in South Africa’s Little Karoo continues its downward spiral thanks to a years-long drought, News24 reported this week. Flocks of our beautiful big birds are shrinking and workers are being laid off. Income is shrinking, too: The industry is estimated to have lost 1 billion rand (about $74 million US dollars) during the drought, which began in 2015. As any ostrich fan knows but which always bears repeating, Little Karoo is the home of Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich Capital of the World. Last year, a drought expert blamed the country’s historic drought on El Niño, an increased demand for water, and climate change. Many scientists predict that climate change denial will soon put our planet past the point of no return and thus destroy us all.
LEGOS

for some reason only this stupid tiger is being tweeted out but rest assured there is an ostrich sculpture in there
A park in England opened a “safari” made out of Legos. RHS Garden Wisley, located in Woking, has life-sized models of various plants and animals on display in its Glasshouse — a perfect way to enjoy the natural world in warmth and comfort when it’s cold outside. The exhibit runs from January 26 to March 3. There are gorillas and elephants and tigers, but Ostrich Weekly recommends skipping right past those to see the beautiful Lego ostrich in the dry temperate zone. Absolutely stunning!
FUN FACT: Lego’s ostrich figure premiered in its Prince of Persia themed set “The Ostrich Race,” released in 2010. It is the only Lego set with an ostrich figure.

Famed ostrich industry supporter and convicted felon Paul Manafort appeared in court on January 25 for a hearing about whether or not the former Trump campaign chairman breached his plea agreement. Manafort was convicted of eight counts of fraud in August 2018, for which he is scheduled to be sentenced on February 8. The plea agreement was in relation to other crimes he did. Over the course of his summer 2018 trial, it was entered into public record that Manafort owned a splendiferous $15,000 jacket made of ostrich leather, showing that Manafort’s poor judgement does not extend to his sartorial choices.
OSTRICH MULTIMEDIA OF THE WEEK
For a little while when I was a kid, my mom cooked eggs by cracking them into a small drinking glass and heating them in the microwave. We called them egg cups! But one morning, the glass exploded. The microwave survived but we never cooked eggs like that again. The guy from Top Gear has some kind of science show on YouTube now. This week, they put an ostrich egg in a microwave to see what would happen but I had a pretty good idea already.
Actually, no, that is not what would happen. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the video is fake (the microwave isn’t even running when the egg blows up), and it’s not even new content — it was on British TV over a decade ago and is being repackaged for this YouTube channel. Disappointing! I didn’t want to leave you with no Ostrich Multimedia of the Week, so I found a video of a guy named Brad microwaving an ostrich egg and this one looks legit.
Thank you for reading this, the first-ever issue of Ostrich Weekly! Do not keep your head in the sand; subscribe to learn more about the goings-on in the world of our big birds!
